Brief
The 15th Congress of the Asia and Pacific Division of IAHR was organized by the Department of Ocean Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, INDIA during 7 ¨C 10 August 2006. The International Symposium on Maritime Hydraulics (ISMH) was held in parallel with the congress. The main theme of the congress is ˇ°Water for Life - Development and Managementˇ±. The six sub- themes of the congress addressed the recent challenges and crisis that the Asia -Pacific countries currently face.
On the first day, Prof. V. Sundar, Chairman of LOC welcomed the delegates from 23 countries. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. A. E. Muthunayagam, Chairman Board of Governors, IIT Madras, Prof. M. S. Ananth, Director, IIT Madras and Dr. E. P. D. Mansard, President of IAHR, as well as Prof. Joseph Lee, Chairman of APD-IAHR.
Four key-note lectures were invited: Dr E.P.D. Mansard, the President of IAHR- ˇ°Looking Ahead: Research priorities in Hydraulics for the 21st centuryˇ±; Prof. V. C. Kulandaiswamy- ˇ°Interlinking of Riversˇ±; Prof. Roger A. Falconer, Cardiff University,- ˇ°Modeling Flood Elevations, Inundation Extent and Water Quality Indicator Levels in Riverine Basinsˇ± and Prof. J. Imberger, Univ of Western Australia-ˇ°Sequesting Carbon in Lakes and Reservoirsˇ±. Eight invited lectures covering a wide spectrum of topics related to hydraulics, water resources and maritime hydraulics were delivered out. A total number of 209 papers have been published in the proceedings out of which 153 papers were presented and well discussed. The total numbers of delegates were 217 from 22 countries around the World.
The papers covered areas of water resource engineering and management, environmental hydraulics and maritime hydraulics. Many of the papers were in the fields of open channel flows, river hydraulics, sediment dynamics, eco-hydraulics, flood forecasting and prevention, hydrodynamic and water quality modeling, mixing and transport, jets and plumes, hydraulic structures, disaster management and mitigation, wave structure interaction, coastal sediment transport and coastal protection, modeling of tsunamis etc.
The technical visits to Mahabalipuram coastal protection site and to the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras, were organized. A variety Indian music and dance program was the highlight of the 3rd day evening. Programs for the accompanying persons were arranged on all days of the congress.
During the Banquet a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Indian Society of Hydraulics (ISH) and IAHR was signed.
