Report from the 5th W.A.T.E.R. Summer School

Classroom at the NOI Techpark The 5th edition of the W.A.T.E.R. Summer School took place at the University of Bolzano-Bozen, from 5 to 9 July 2021. The Local Organizing Committee led by Prof. Maurizio Righetti (University of Bolzano-Bozen) provided a high-quality scientific programme, with access to top notch facilities in the NOI Techpark of Bolzano-Bozen.

Prof. Massimo Guerrero (University of Bologna) discusses the UVP results with the students. In times of pandemics and complying with all the health regulations of the University of Bolzano, the 5th edition was a success gathering 25 participants (14 attendees coming from different universities, and 11 lecturers) for a presential event on experimental methods in hydraulics and fluid mechanics. Courses about acoustic measurement methods, such as UVP, ADV and ADCP, and optical based techniques, such as PIV, PTV and LDV, were taught. These courses were complemented with hands-on sessions in the Laboratory of Thermo-Fluid Dynamics, of the University of Bolzano-Bozen and with a field trip to a nearby stream where drones were applied to surface velocimetry. During the laboratory session there was also a live connection with the 1st IAHR Online Forum.

The W.A.T.E.R. Summer School was initiated by Prof. Dr Margaret Chen from Vrije Universiteit, Brussels, in 2016 and it’s organised under the auspices of the IAHR technical committee on Experimental Methods and Instrumentation.
