Abstract: The interaction of continuous freshwater flow from upstream watershed into a bar-blocked estuary is investigated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The trapped water in the blocked estuary is gradually displaced by the freshwater inflow. The interface point, defined as the point of confluence between the initial saltwater wedge and the freshwater, is considered to be characteristic of the interaction between the water bodies and the same has been investigated. The effect of slope of the estuary (α), length of the estuary (L), density difference between the freshwater and the saltwater (∆ρ) and the incoming freshwater discharge (Q) on the wedge movement are considered and investigated. The numerical model has been compared with the experimental results reported in the literature for the purpose of validation.
