Abstract: Calculation of scour at bridge piers, which are protected by fender systems, requires evaluation of the hydraulic effects of these collision protection systems. A case study is presented involving application of the fully three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code FLOW-3D to analyze hydraulics at a lift-span bridge, crossing a navigable waterway. The hydraulics and pier scour are analyzed for a 100-year flow condition for a lift-span pier with and without its collision protection system.
