Abstract: Solar radiation (SR) plays an important role in the formation of thermal stratification within reservoirs and lakes. Solar radiation is greatly affected by the position of the sun and by mountain shading, which varies with the surrounding topography. In this study, Ogouchi Reservoir, located in an alpine area, was selected as the study site. Considering the topography of the reservoir, weather stations were set up at five locations to measure SR. The results showed that solar radiation levels differed among these locations. The theoretical solar radiation was calculated based on empirical equations and mountain topography and compared with measured data, which showed strong agreement. Using this calculation method, the amount of solar radiation falling on the lake surface can be estimated in detail for each area.
