Characteristics of Suburban Heat Island with an Example of Northern Part of Tokyo

Abstract: In the early summer 1992,air temperature in the Greater Tokyo was not specially high.The weather was fine until the later half of August.And then,in September,in this regionthere were many places where the air temperature reached the highest in the year.The south-ern part of Saitama prefecture,which is located in the north of the Tokyo Metropolitan Area(Figure 1)was one of them.In the first half of September,in Koshigaya city the air temper-ature was recorded 37°℃,highest in the metropolitan area.Based on the observation data,it was noted that in cities in southern part of Saitama such as Koshigaya and Urawa,theair temperature was close to,and even higher than that in Otemachi,the heart of Tokyo(Ta-ble 1).The maximum air temperature here was not only higher than that in the center of Tokyo,but also higher than that in Kyusyu or Shikoku district located far away in thesouthern part of Japan.Thus it can besaid that this area is one of the most severeheat island areas in Japan.However,untilnow,there is still no detailed study aboutthis problem here.As pointed by manystudy results,the main cause of the heatisland problem is anthropogenic heat andthe existing of urban structures as pavedsurfaces and buildings.For this reason,itshould be natural that the temperature inthe heart of Tokyo would be higher thanthat in the surrounding areas such as thesouthern part of Saitama where wide ru-ral areas exist.Hence it is suspected thatthe cause of the heat island in the southernSaitama and other suburban areas is not necessarily limited only to the local heating processes there.The aim of this study is to elucidate the cause of the heat island in the northernSaitama based on observations and a numerical simulation.
