Abstract: Sediment entrainment and transportation is a phenomenon that can be observed in many physical processes. In engineering applications, scouring of sediment in the vicinity of a structure can result in serious problems, even failure, in both aeolian and fluvial environments. Numerous experimental, field and numerical studies have been undertaken for many decades to get a better understanding about these phenomena. Recent findings have shown that both force and duration are important parameters for determining the dislodgement potential of individual particles under turbulent flow conditions. Because of the highly fluctuating nature of the flow, the impulse of peak events, instead of averaged properties or instantaneous extreme values, would be a better predictor of particle dislodgement.
