Abstract: Plastic pollution in aquatic systems is a mounting global concern, and understanding the transport dynamics of plastic debris is key to developing effective mitigation strategies. This study presents a novel approach that combines controlled laboratory measurements with numerical simulations to explore virtual plastic particle trajectories in open-channel flows. The primary objective is to evaluate the performance of the Maxey-Riley equation for predicting the movement of plastic particles under two distinct buoyancy scenarios: non-buoyant particles simulated using near-bed velocity data, and buoyant particles simulated using near-surface measurements.
