Abstract: Atmospheric Kármán vortex streets have been observed from satellites in the wakes of numerous islands, including Jeju Island. When large-scale two-dimensional vortices (on the order of tens to hundreds of kilometers) flow over a relatively thin atmospheric boundary layer (approximately 1–2 km deep), it is interesting to investigate the turbulent properties at the interface of these two flow regimes. For instance, the turbulent eddy viscosity may differ by several orders of magnitude. This study aims to systematically examine the evolution of atmospheric vortex flow patterns and upstream flow conditions from the perspective of wake instabilities.
