Abstract: Failure in dams majorly occurs due to overtopping and piping. But as per the database collected by ASDSO from 2010 to 2019, it is reported that, dam failure incidents majorly raised due to overtopping failure. In this study, dam failure incidents are investigated by assuming the overtopping failure in earthen dams. Earthen dams like Hirakud mainly fails due to erosive forces which leads to breach formation. Development of dam break prediction model requires breach parameters, terrain data, elevation data and discharge data for unsteady flow simulation. By using QGIS software, a shapefile is created which stores the terrain data of geographic features. Further, by using Earth Explorer USGS, DEM file is created to store elevation data. The “MNDWI” index is used for identifying the water features through Google earth engine software. Moreover, this study analyzes the deviations occurred in flow depth, flow velocity and water surface elevation during dam break and the flood affected areas at downstream of Hirakud dam after dam break using the HEC-RAS.
