Abstract: A Eulerian-Lagrangian method (ELM) with monotonic interpolation is developed for the advection-dominated transport problems. The ELM using quadratic interpolation is first investigated through an analysis of its truncation error. The analysis shows that accuracy of the ELM is greatly improved by solving the advection-diffusion problem at higher Courant number. Conditions to yield oscillations in the ELM with the quadratic interpolation are examined. The ELM with a monotonic interpolation function is then proposed. Examples are presented to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed ELM over the upstream-weighting finite-element method (UWFEM) in terms of accuracy as well as flexibility in applications.
