Abstract: The effect of a wind stress on the water quality in a semi-enclosed bay has been studied using the results of a two dimensional numerical model and field data. BOD was adopted as a tracer of water quality. The results showed that a clockwise circulation existed in the eastern side of the bay, regardless of wind direction. This result was in-line with field observations obtained during the summer of 1981. The advective effect of a freshwater discharge on the pollutant dispersion was indicated to be poor. However, if wind stresses were included, the flow through the bay became more dispersive and the spreading of BOD was remarkably improved; although this improvement also depended upon the wind direction. Nevertheless the level of BOD dispersion rarely exceeded the levels at Jeodo Island, which was located in the middle of the bay. This results showed that the significance of the tidal exchange was very low particularly with a small maximum tidal range of 2 m. Hence, for low wind conditions the flow system could produce poor water quality and, over the long term, red tides.
