Abstract: Estuaries are highly productive systems that support various activities of great commercial, recreational and aesthetic value, for which biodiversity is essential. These systems are subject to various conditions, including tidal variations, flows and discharges from different sources. In this work, a scaled physical model of a stretch of the Mondego River located in the estuary area at Figueira da Foz (Portugal) was constructed and used to analyze different pollutant releases and especially the role of a natural cavity in the retention of these pollutants. This is of special relevance to understanding the behaviour and fate of pollutants discharged by wastewater treatment facilities in the natural water courses. Also, the data generated will allow to infer the efficiency of nature based solutions such as cavities in rivers to control pollution.
