About
On February 13, Manuel Gómez Valentín, an active member of the Spanish Chapter of the IAHR, passed away in Barcelona. Manuel Gómez Valentín was Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, professor of numerous subjects related to hydraulics and hydrology at the Higher Technical School of Civil Engineering, Canals and Ports of Barcelona (where he also held various management positions). and a member of the Flumen Institute since its inception. He was an expert in various fields of hydrology and hydraulic engineering, particularly in the field of urban hydrology (flooding in the city, study of discharges in rainy season from sewage networks into the receiving environment, etc.). It is worth highlighting the innovative work he carried out in the Hydraulics Laboratory of the UPC for the characterization of the catchment capacity of drains or to establish criteria of danger and drag for pedestrians and vehicles He always had a very active participation in the activities promoted by the Spanish Chapter of the IAHR and by the Foundation for the Promotion of Water Engineering, particularly through the Ingeniería del Agua magazine and the Conference on Water Engineering. In the Ingeniería del Agua magazine, he was a member of the Governing Council from the beginning of the magazine and his articles were frequently published in it; already in number 1 in 1994 he was co-author of the article "Problems of stormwater drainage in urban areas and the hydraulic study of collector networks". In the Conference on Water Engineering, he actively participated in many of its editions, both sending communications and collaborating through the Scientific Committee, of which he was a member in almost all editions. But above all of the above, Manolo was always a close companion, willing to help, simple and humble. An example for all of us who have had the opportunity to treat him.
