I have had an active career in river flood and water management at HR Wallingford (and its predecessors) since 1974, with project experience in the UK, Bangladesh, China, France, India, Ireland, Romania and Thailand. The IAHR was the first professional institution I joined and since joining in 1985 I have served as a member and chairman of the British national committee, as a member of the Fluvial Hydraulics committee and as a member of the European committee. Although I retired in from employment in 2016, I am still retained as a consultant to the Floods Group of HR Wallingford. I have contributed to several research projects for the European Commission, the British Government and the UK Environment Agency. This has included flood risk assessment, climate change impacts, catchment management and mathematical modelling of river flows. Between 1995 and 2009 I led 5 European research grants from the Environment and Climate programme; I was the Coordinator for the FLOODsite Integrated Project (2004-09). For four years I was a member of the European “Working Group F” for the European Directive on the assessment and management of flood risks. Over my career, I have supervised 11 PhD students in aspects of hydraulics and hydrology, 5 as the Director of Studies. I was a part-time tutor for the Open University in applied mathematics between 1998 and 2016, teaching final year students aspects of mathematical methods, fluid mechanics, waves, diffusion and variational principles. In January 2014 I was appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Flood Risk Management, having been a founding member of the Board of Editors in 2007. In the UK I am Chartered Engineer, an Honorary Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and, a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
