About
Professor Jianhua Tao graduated from Tianjin University with a Baccalaureate degree in Hydraulic Engineering in 1957, and successively served as an Assistant Professor (1957-62), Lecturer (1962-83), Associate Professor (1983-87), full Professor (1987-13) and Dean of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE) (1999-13) at Tianjin University. In 1981 she went to the Netherlands on a scholarship from the International Institute for Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering where she worked under the supervision of Professor Michael Abbott and obtained her Master's degree in Computational Hydraulics (1982). Afterwards she served as a Research Fellow in Danish Hydraulic Institute, Denmark (1982-83) and a UNDP Expert on Mission to Pune, India (1992 and 1994). During her academic career, she published extensively in the field of hydraulic engineering, computational fluid mechanics and numerical simulation of fluid. Moreover, she has undertaken more than 30 key research projects concerning the Bohai Sea sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, the World Bank (GEF), and etc. As a long-standing delegate to the national Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a counsellor of Tianjin Municipal Government, she has been a strong advocate of environment protection of the Bohai Sea, regional economic development, ocean literacy, education, and public health.
