Brace Professor in Civil Engineering at McGill University in the Department of Civil Engineering. B.A.Sc. Hons. (Civil Eng.) from Queen's University in Kingston, Canada and a Ph.D. (Civil Eng.) from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand on a Commonwealth Scholarship under the supervision of Prof. I. Wood. I have always been fascinated by the flow of water, and by engineering structures to control water flow, while I aim to preserve its ecosystems - which provides a wealth of topics to study. Teaching fluid mechanics, open channel flow, river engineering and water sustainability allows me to also interest students in the field. In environmental fluid mechanics/hydraulics, experimental research in fluid mechanics allows us to study turbulent mixing processes, such the effect of ambient turbulence on turbulent jets. In hydraulics, we work on problems related to hydropower, such as intake vortices and aeration (spillway, draft tube). In Quebec rivers, sediment transport past groynes is of interest for fish habitat and, due to the glacial history of the area, fluvial erosion of cohesive sediment is important as river flows become more variable. Preserving water ecosystems led to work on basin wide hydrologic modelling. Ensuring the provision of potable water is a hydro-social problem, particularly in resource constrained areas, and in terms of its quality, I am interested in its trace metal contamination and the resulting health impacts.
