Abstract: A multi-layer, finite difference model is presented for the prediction of the threedimensional, wind driven hydrodynamic circulation and excess temperature distribution in coastal zones. The scheme employs a series of simplified, but realistic assumptions for the open sea boundaries and the heat transport within and across the layers. The model is applied in a coastal region of southern Crete, Greece, where a power plant will be constructed. Calculations showed that excess temperatures in the region of water intake are less than 0. 1℃ and in the region of ecological interest on the sea bed are less than 0. 05 ℃.
