Lessons on the Management of Flood Risk in Colombia, South America

Abstract: In Colombia, South America, flooding from heavy rains during 2010-2011, produced heavy losses in infrastructure, lives, and property. The paper intends to share with the international water community some experiences and lessons from these events, particularly relating to present hydrologic conditions, risk management tools and policies. Some outstanding cases are analyzed inthe Magdalena river basin, (257, 000 Km2), holding85% of the countries’ population, (total, 45 million), most agricultural valleys and major cities.
