Physical Model Study of Meandering in Fluvial Rivers

Abstract: The present paper presents an experimental study to investigate channel morphology in fluvial rivers, particularly the development of meandering rivers. River morphological changes consist of riverbed deformation and bank erosion. The hydrodynamic and transport sediment processes involved are very complex. Therefore, it is still very challenging to predict such changes, even though many research efforts have been made to improve the understanding of the processes. The experiments and observations have suggested that the flow velocity in river bends plays an important role in bank erosion and sediment transportation. Following the pioneering work by Friedkin (1945), in the present study the experiments were carried out in a straight channel with an angle being introduced at a location upstream to force the flow to change direction. Non-cohesive silica sand was used as bed material. It was observed that the up part of a bank collapses after the bottom part is eroded.
