Abstract: In a combined system, the release of water during an extreme rainfall event causes an impact in the receiving water body. Most of these discharges occur due to overflows necessary for network relief purposes, consisting of runoff polluted water without adequate treatment for its discharge. Moreover, as they are intermittent discharges and difficult to quantify due to their type of regime, so the magnitude of this impact in terms of pollutants is not so easy to measure. The new regulatory context in Spain (Ministerio de transicion ecologica y reto demografico 2003) and the draft of the imminent European directive of wastewater treatment (Directorate-General for Environment 2023) requires the measurement of pollutant concentration discharged in those events. In this project, Canal de Isabel II (the public company that carries out the management of the whole urban cycle in the Madrid region, with more than 15.000 km of sewer network and more than 1200 points of CSO) has developed a methodology for quantifying the usual physicochemical parameters (COD, BOD, SS, TS, Ammonium, etc. ) as pollution indicators and also a technique to calculate these parameters based on the turbidity measurement.
