Water Grid: Is Electrical Energy Recovery Possible? From the Water Supply Network? From the Water Distribution Network?

Abstract: In the FlexWatter project, a research funded by the FPS Economy of Belgium (Federal level) and undertaken by some EERA Joint Program HydroPower active members, the research question is: “Could drinkable water network be a solution for electricity flexibility for the TSO or the DSO? To answer this question, several Belgian universities and the water DSO for the Brussels-Capital Region (BCR), called Vivaqua, gather their efforts to set up a case study based on the BCR water supply & water distribution networks (WSDN). With recorded data from 2019 till 2022 (during about 4 complete years) in terms of water flow, water pressure, electricity consumption and climate data, a first picture has been drawn to better understand the topology of the BCR WSDN, based on the schematic depicted in Figure 1.
