Abstract: The expansion of private paved surfaces is one of the causes of flash flooding in urban areas in London. This problem is not unique to London. It can be seen in any private vehicle dominated city in the world. Vehicles need smooth surfaces to drive, then they need paved surfaces to park. People want to park them in locations convenient to loading and unloading the vehicle, therefore they pave a driveway to their front or rear door, a carport, or a garage. While this is all logical, it leads to a reduction of water permeable land surfaces and an expansion of impermeable surfaces. These impermeable surfaces drain water rapidly into sewer systems. Sewers that become overwhelmed, either flooding roadways or flow into urban waterways which can also flood.
