Abstract: Beira is the provincial capital of Sofala, Mozambique, located approximately 1200 km to the north of Maputo and third largest city of Mozambique by population. Its port is of strategic importance, being the gateway for cargo transport from and towards the land-locked countries, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, the so-called Beira Corridor. Because of this the population of Beira is expanding very rapidly, thus placing great pressure on urban development, which is rapidly expanding into floodable areas of Central and Eastern Beira, as well as new neighbourhoods towards river Maria estuary.
