Agir Project Action No. 3 - Characterization of Wastewater Affluent to Wastewater Treatment Plants from Hospital Units in the Municipality of Lisbon

Abstract: Wastewater sanitation activities contribute to people's quality of life and public health, promoting more environmentally friendly and sustainable cities. Characterization of wastewater that flows into Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) enables processes to be managed with improved efficiency in terms of treatment, contributing to environmentally safe treated wastewater, either for final disposal or reuse. In this context, the AgIR - Action Plan for Management of Industrial Wastewater in Greater Lisbon and West, emerged and was approved by Portuguese Government on the 31. st December 2021 with funding of 4.4 million Euros from the Portuguese Environmental Fund, to be implemented between 2022 and 2026. The Action Plan includes the following Action Lines: Action no. 1 "Technical support for municipalities and the respective municipal management entities"; Action no. 2 "Technical support for industries, in coordination with municipalities and the respective municipal management entities"; Action no. 3 "Characterization of wastewater flowing to Wastewater treatment plants from hospital units in the Municipality of Lisbon in order to help respond to possible outbreaks of disease in the population, improve the response of WWTP treatment processes, with a view to reducing pathogenic environmental risks and emerging pollutants present"; Action no. 4 "Training for technicians of the management entities of municipal services and industries in the field of industrial effluents".
