Abstract: Compared with heavy precipitation and droughts, the hot extremes (including heatwaves) have more consensus in the scientific community about the increase in its occurrence. Its effects include health problems, worse air pollution and limited functioning of key infrastructure, such as transportation, sanitation, and energy systems. The goal of the study is to investigate heatwaves (HW) over a highly populated region of mainland Portugal using ERA5-Land reanalysis data for a series of 41 years.
