Abstract: Groundwater management is essential to ensure water availability, especially due to the increased use of this resource for public supply. For effective governance, countries must implement water resource policies supported by clear regulations and adequate institutional arrangements. In Brazil, renewable groundwater reserves account for more than half of the municipalities relying on these sources for their supply. Governance includes the participation of different actors: the government, which must create sustainable policies; science, which should provide technical solutions and communicate with society; and society, which must demand and actively participate in public policy formulation. The integration of these three groups is essential to address water management challenges and ensure the sustainable use of resources, thus preserving ecosystems and fostering socioeconomic development. Brazil still needs to advance in building its groundwater governance framework.
