Abstract: In this work a numerical scheme for modelling non-hydrostatic flows with non-negligible vertical velocity is presented. The proposed model solves the Vertically Averaged and Moment Equations (VAM), a set of equations that is able to reproduce non-hydrostatic free-surface flows by relaxing some of the Shallow Water Equations (SWEs) assumptions. The VAM system is here solved using a fully-implicit finite element scheme that is able to deal with the presence of both shocks and transcritical flows. The capability of the model to reproduce flows for which the shallow water hypotheses are no longer valid is tested against experimental benchmarks considering both steady and unsteady conditions.
