Abstract: Ca precipitation in drinking water networks causes water supply problems. Chlorination has been observed to cause an increase in Ca precipitation in some drinking water networks. However, little information is available on this subject. The kinetics of Ca precipitation at different chlorination doses was carried out to determine the reaction order and global coefficient of drinking water from groundwater source. Different doses of sodium hypochlorite were tested. Increasing the hypochlorite dosage promotes Ca precipitation, giving a second order reaction and global coefficients of nearly zero, -7.20 x 10-4 Lh-1mg-1 and -2.98x10-3 Lh-1mg-1 for hypochlorite dosages of 0.5 of NaClO at 2% /1000 mL of drinking water from groundwater, 1.5 mL/1000 mL and 15 mL/1000 mL, respectively. Disinfection of drinking water with hypochlorite causes an increase in Ca precipitation, so its addition must be done carefully.
