Abstract:
Nature-based Solutions in large river systems are often associated with large-scale ecosystem restoration works, such as reconnecting floodplains and the removal of dams and other hard structures. River restoration approaches not only make space for floodwaters, but they also enhance the natural value of rivers and alter the way the river behaves over time and space. This article explores the need for large-scale and longterm monitoring in river restoration projects and how remote sensing can provide additional valuable information, especially on floodplain dynamics and the co-adjustment of landforms and vegetation over time.
