Abstract: The assessment of the risk due to rapidly varying flows in open channels and/or canals can be carried out with the aid of mathematical models, scaling models and 1:1 experiments. In this case study the first and the last of the approaches mentioned have been adopted, results from both as well as compari- sons are reported. A version of the two-step, shock-capturing MacCormack sche-me was shown to be an adequate tool in such investigations. It is, however, advisable to supplement the one-dimensional mathematical analyses by an esti-mate of wave runup on the embankment slopes.
