Abstract: Many researches on turbulent structures and the associated sediment transport in steady open-channel flows have been conducted intensively in the last 20 years by the use of hydrogen-bubble techniques, hot-film anemometers (CTA) and laser-Doppler anemometer (LDA). The comprehensive knowledge on these topics is reviewed and available in the IAHR-monograph written by Nezu & Nakagawa (1993). A high possibility has recently been verified by Nezu et al. (1993b) that accurate LDA data obtained in laboratory flumes can also be applied to flow structures of actual rivers and estuaries at high Reynolds numbers, including the complex features of secondary currents and turbulence. This suggests strongly that the accurate laboratory data of open-channel flows are very contributory to river engineering in steady field flows.
