Abstract: Overbank flow process in straight and meandering compound channels are examined from the results of numerical computation using a depth averaged turbulent flow model. It indicates that the non straight main channel alignment retards the speed of the flooding wave. The front of the overbank flow in straight channel has a stable shuttle pattern. The overbank flow in meandering channel starts at the bend concave. The left and right flood plains are inundated alternatively follows the main channel bend. Subsidence of hydrography at overbank stage is also observed.
