Abstract: In a number of urban flood problems, information on the peak discharge in sewers or channels is sought without requiring the entire flood hydrograph. A simple procedure is proposed here to determine the peak discharge at different locations and times in a sewer without routing of the unsteady flow. The procedure is based on dimensional analysis and regression analysis of peak discharge data obtained from numerical simulation over a wide range of sewer and inflow conditions. The numerical simulation is accomplished by using a second-order scheme applied to the characteristic form of the Saint-Venant equations.
