Abstract: A methodology to assess the impact of structures (such as roads, railways and embankments) on the flow for extraordinary floods, is described through its application to a dramatic case: the big flood of the Parana River Delta (56,700 m3/s! ) which occurred in 1983. The method consists in numerically simulating the flow with a two-dimensional hydrodynamic model, for a cascade of scenarios generated by introducing one structure at a time. The main model results are the change in water level for critical points due to each structure. It allows the prediction of the impact of projected structures for similar flow conditions.
