Abstract: Water diversion of the Lower Yellow River is a significant aspect to alleviate the drought in the extensive area along the two banks of the river, where belongs to a semi-arid region. However, the tremendous amount of sediment load also brings a series of problems for safety usage of some irrigation projects. This paper, with some data collected in a typical irrigation project in the River, analyzed some special properties of such diversion projects and some concerned problems are presented. A conclusion can be made that an appropriate consideration on sediment deposition is very important for project designing. Through the selection of some operation schemes a favorable water diversion may be obtained.
