Abstract: A semi-empirical model for turbulent flow over sand-grain roughness is developed in order to examine the effect of molecular viscosity on the sediment transport process over sand bed. The model is calibrated using the experimental data obtained by Nikuradse for turbulent pipe flow over sand-grain roughness. A series of calculations is conducted using the model to de-termine the drag and lift forces exerted on sediment particles over sand bed. The results of the calculation obtained for the initiation of sediment motion give a correct dependency of the process on molecular viscosity as delineated by the Shields diagram.
