A Study on the Efficiency of a Vortex Tube for Sediment Trapping

Abstract: By means of analyzing the hydraulic conditions of a vortex tube, a formular for deter-mining the ratio of water consumption of the vortex tube was derived, in which the ratio is a function of Froude Number, the angle between the tube and the flow direction, the parameters h/D and A1/A2. Also, another formula expressing the sediment trapping coefficient of the vortex tube was obtained according to the random movement feature of a sediment particle during its transport in the flow at the state of bed load. For the purpose of verifying the validity of these two formulas, a systematic experiment on vortex tube was conducted. The results calculated from these formulas agree well with the experiment data.
