Abstract: Conditional means, variances and skewness coefficients of probability dis-tributions of runoff discharge and water storage at a flood control reservoir given several hour lead forecasted rainfall intensities are theoretically de-rived using expectation operations on a linearlized relationship between rain-fall and runoff intensity and on the relationship between runoff (inflow), out-flow and water storage of the reservoir. Based on this theory significance of rainfall forecasts with various levels of accuracy is investigated.
