Abstract: This paper addresses reservoir operation planning procedure based on well known statistical theory. The methodology is based on a concept that streamflow series generated by 10-days averaged discharges are assumed to fit bivariate log-normal distribution. Probabilities of reservoir water releases are then determined from transition matrices derived after estimating parameters in bivariate lognormal distribution. Computation scheme for predicting reservoir water releases for three consecutive 10-days period commencing from existing present state is proposed. This method may be a useful reference for reservoir operators judging from results obtained using data from Tone River basin in Japan.
