Abstract: This paper is aimed to summarize the present state of knowledge regarding debris-flow rheological models (or constitutive equations). Debris flows are broadly interpreted as gravity-induced mass movements. For the sake of simplicity of discussion about the applicabilities of the existing rheological models, debris flows are qualitatively classified into three categories: granular flows, mud flows, and stony debris flows. Various existing rheological models for these flows in various flow regimes are reviewed and discussed.
