Abstract: A debris flow in the upstream reach and a sediment flow in the downstream reach occurred in a small mountain torrent (the Hase River) in Matsuyama, Japan. Field investigation about the flows proved that the debris flow was caused by a sudden flush of water from a pond, and settled at the middle reach where the bed slope changes from12° to 5.5°, which caused a sediment flow in the downstream reach. The flood discharge is simulated by the numerical method in the kinematic assumption and the amount of sediment deposited at the downstream reach is estimated with the above calculated flow discharge.
