Abstract: The island of Taiwan has a total area of about 36,000 square kilometers, in which about 32% is mountainous area of the sea level over 1,000 meter. Most of the mountainous geology belongs to sedimentary rock and metamorphic rock, which have the weak and crackable characteristics. The average annual rainfall is 2,500mm of which 78% concentrated in typhoon seasons from May to October. These bad natural environments cause the damages of debris flow taking place frequently in Taiwan. In the period of 1989 to 1991, four big serious debris flows happened in eastern Taiwan and killed about 70 people. Therefore, the prevention of debris flow becomes an important work in Taiwan right now.
