Abstract: Two large rock falls on 18 April and 9 May 1991 with a total deposition volume of 30 million m^3 caused the blockage of the Matter-Valley about 10 km downstream of Zermatt in south-western part of the Swiss Alps (fig.1). The Vispa River formed a lake behind this dam and threatened to flood the village of Randa. The release of a flood surge after a failure of the dam could also not be excluded.
