Abstract: The determination of the overpressure on a check dam due to the dynamic impact of debris flow poses major uncertainties in the design of such structures. Currently two different approaches are present in the technical literature. According to diffused practice in fact dynamic forces are assumed proportional to the hydrostatic pressure on the dam: experimental evidences on collapse of some structures against debris flow seems to support this approach. From a theoretical point of view this procedure seems difficult to be proved, overpressure being related to an hydrodynamic action.
