Abstract: It is very important when planning and conducting countermeasures against pyroclastic flow disasters to clarify the mechanism of damage caused by hot ash clouds of pyroclastic flows. We inquired into the forms of damage by, mainly, the hot ash clouds of pyroclastic flows at Unzen Volcano and figured out the temperature and wind velocity of the hot ash clouds of the pyroclastic flows from the state of damage by high temperature and the state of damage by hot ash cloud. The temperature of the hot ash clouds are estimated at 300°~400℃ or more, and the wind velocity of the hot ash cloud is estimated at more than 20 m/s.
