Abstract: In 1883,a giant tsunami was generated by a volcanic activity in the Sunda Strait,Indonesia,shown in Fig.1.Its runups were reported higher than 30m.More than 36,000 lives were lost. There is no the- ory of the tsunami gen- eration caused by vol- canic eruption.The Krakatau tsunami was numerically studiedby Nakamura(1984),whose major concernwas the tsunami out-side the Sunda Straitand no detailed dis-cussion was given aboutthe tsunami in the strait.
