Abstract: Shore protection ffects of artifcial reefis are investigated on the basis of coastal topography survey data before and after construction of reefs and field measurement data on waves and currents behind the reefs. An artificial reef is found to be effective for preventing beach erosion, because wave breaking over the reef causes a decrease. in the wave height and run-tp in the region behind the reef, and consequently the erosive sediment transport rate is decreased. Nu-merical simulations of waves and currents around the reefs are also conducted to derionstrate the effects due to construction of the artificial reefs.
