Abstract: This paper aims at investigating experimentally the characteristics and mechanism of the local scouring around two large circular cylinders under wave action, in relation to the case of one large circular cylinder. The bottom configuration change around two large circular cylinders is revealed to differ from that of one circular cylinder and to be under strong influences of the incident wave angle to the cylinders. The area of local scouring around the cylinders has a strong correlation with the spatial variation of water particle velocity at bottom along the cylinders, and the local scouring area is shown to be well predicted theoretically by diffraction theory.
