Abstract: The stability of the armor unit in relation to the wave forces acting on a spherical armor unit of a submerged breakwater was analyzed experimentally in this paper, and a generalized stability model of the stable weight of a spherical armor unit was derived. The non-dimensional quantity of stable weight, W'/ρghD~2, showed clear tendency with the dimensionless maximum wave force. And the stable weight becomes large at x/L=0.0, for all sizes of armor unit; thus, the vicinity around the crown-edge was confirmed to be the most critical location of the submerged breakwater. Moreover, the stable weight of the armor units increases as wave forces and wave height becomes large and is greatly affected by the action of breaking waves, methods of placement and size of the armor unit.
